In this blog post, decades-long homeschooler and bibliovore Laura Kooistra shares her top ten!<\/p>\n<h2>The 10 Best Books for Homeschooling Parents<\/h2>\n<p>Like a kid in a candy shop, I was gathering to-be-read (TBR) titles of the best homeschooling books as fast as I could. I have an established habit of attending a classical education conference each year. Visiting vendors, talking with friends and classical education colleagues, and gleaning from speakers give me pages of suggestions. A pang metaphorically shot through my chest one year when a notable leader in the classical education renewal stood behind the keynote podium and declared, \u201cLet\u2019s get this straight. You will never get through all the books you\u2019ve put on your TBR list during this conference!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As his words landed in my ears, the first feelings were disappointment, disbelief, and denial. I\u2019m an avid reader and willing to make material and time investments in consuming the printed word! As a homeschooling mom, I\u2019m eager to run hard after the piles of books about homeschooling stacked up next to my reading chair. I couldn\u2019t quite believe that I wouldn\u2019t finish the race. Denial swooped in, I dismissed his claim for the moment, and kept scribbling titles in my notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Months later, entrenched in the daily habits of homeschooling and the abundance of family life, the speaker\u2019s words returned to my memory. I looked at my dusty TBR pile and felt a wave of gracious relief wash over me. There was liberty in his statement that I had not initially recognized. His words now landed as a consoling reminder that I am a creature with high hopes but <strong>real limitations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It took me some time to internalize and apply the statement and work it out practically. But, over time, I\u2019ve developed the following list of books for homeschooling parents that I frequently recommend to friends and fellow homeschoolers.<\/p>\n<p>Before I share my list, let me offer a few criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not all the titles are books <strong>about<\/strong> homeschooling. Some of them are just good books that are vessels of truth, goodness, and beauty.<\/li>\n<li>Many are available in our <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Classical Conversations bookstore<\/a>. As I have journeyed from <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.com\/programs\/foundations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foundations<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.com\/programs\/challenge\/challenge-iv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenge IV<\/a>, I\u2019ve come to appreciate the many thoughtfully curated selections used in the Classical Conversations proven program.<\/li>\n<li>I am a classical, <strong>Christian<\/strong> educator. Of course, the Bible is on the list, and I hope you already use it as your number one resource!<\/li>\n<li>Although I did keep to a list of \u201conly\u201d ten titles, you\u2019ll notice I employ some tricks to sneak a few more books in. Be gracious to me and have compassion for my editor, mkay?<\/li>\n<li>Finally, I tried to guess which books are most accessible \u2014 the easiest to read and apply. Then, I ordered the list from what I think is <strong>easiest<\/strong> to <strong>most difficult <\/strong>to read. Should we ever meet at a homeschool conference, I would love to hear your thoughts about my arrangement!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>10 Books Every Homeschool Parent Should Read<\/h2>\n<p>Okay, here it is \u2014 from my shelf to your eyeballs \u2014 <strong>the ten best books for homeschooling parents<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h3>1. <em>Aesop\u2019s Fables<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Although you might think this should land in the category of kindergarten homeschool books (and I don\u2019t disagree), <em>Aesop\u2019s Fables<\/em> is far-reaching in its application. Short, easy-to-understand stories that don\u2019t require readers to moralize but instead clearly signal right and wrong, this book is a treasure store of true, good, and often beautiful stories that combine history, practical wisdom, and fantastic scenarios. Although I\u2019ve read this with all my littlest learners, I find it especially useful to recall the stories with my teenagers. For parents homeschooling a wide range of learners, don\u2019t forget the power of fables!<\/p>\n<p>(And here I am, straight out of the gate, stretching the limits of \u201cten\u201d! For the same reasons as above, I strongly encourage you to have a variety of fairytales on your shelves. My family particularly enjoys the versions\u00a0by Andrew Lang and the tales written by Hans Christian Andersen.)<\/p>\n<h3>2.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/products\/honey-for-a-childs-heart?utm_campaign=7171494-blog-Bookstore&amp;utm_source=bookstore&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=bookstore&amp;utm_content=Honey%20for%20a%20Child%27s%20Heart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Honey for a Child\u2019s<\/a> Heart <\/em>by Gladys Hunt<\/h3>\n<p>First published more than 50 years ago, this book stands as the best homeschooling help for parents who want to know, \u201cWhat should we read next?\u201d Divided into age categories, author Gladys Hunt offers robust lists of the best books, many of which are probably available at your local library.<\/p>\n<h3>3. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/challenge-a\/products\/as003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carry on Mr. Bowditch<\/a> <\/em>by Jean Lee Latham<\/h3>\n<p>My words and example sometimes fall short when I wish to inspire and motivate my kids toward excellence in education and integrity of character. Nat Bowditch accomplished for my kids what I could not. He offered a type \u2014 of learner, adventurer, and average person who encounters both the highs and lows of life \u2014 with a different voice than <em>mom. <\/em>Included in our <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.com\/programs\/challenge\/challenge-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenge A<\/a> curriculum, <em>Carry on Mr. Bowditch<\/em> is also an excellent family read-aloud.<\/p>\n<p>(Okay, here\u2019s my next little trick. I also suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/challenge-b\/products\/bs002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Little Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers<\/em><\/a> by Ralph Moody. Part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.com\/programs\/challenge\/challenge-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenge B<\/a> student&#8217;s experience, Ralph is relatable most notably for his flaws and character growth. And set in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, he\u2019s maybe a little more relatable to modern kids.)<\/p>\n<h3>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/foundations\/products\/es040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Core<\/em><\/a> by Leigh Bortins<\/h3>\n<h3>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/products\/as051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Question<\/em><\/a> by Leigh Bortins<\/h3>\n<h3>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/products\/bs050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> by Leigh Bortins<\/h3>\n<p>Although each is distinct, these three books are the most accessible for homeschooling parents I\u2019ve read, especially for the classical educator. I\u2019ve been classically educating for over a decade, and I make a practice of re-reading these books annually. Nicely aligned with the classical arts of grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric, each title deserves its place on your homeschool reading list.<\/p>\n<p>(In case you don\u2019t already have these on your best books about homeschooling shelf, maybe you\u2019d like to start with this free downloadable book, <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/products\/sc058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Echo in Celebration<\/em><\/a>. Also written by Leigh Bortins, you will be introduced to her and some of Classical Conversations\u2019 history in a winsome and relatable way. And you\u2019ll gather some classical education homeschool nuggets too!)<\/p>\n<h3>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/challenge-i\/products\/up-from-slavery-1s051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Up From Slavery<\/em><\/a> by Booker T. Washington<\/h3>\n<p>Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote the following in 1947 in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/king-papers\/documents\/purpose-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Purpose of Eduction<\/a>,&#8221; a piece for Stanford University\u2019s newspaper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character \u2014 that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Up From Slavery<\/em>, an autobiography by <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.com\/blog\/booker-t-washington-and-true-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Booker T. Washington<\/a>, an education pioneer and visionary founder of Tuskegee Institute, embodies the meaning of King\u2019s quote and educates and inspires the reader toward liberty. Although she has gone on to read many more books that may now displace <em>Up from Slavery<\/em>, my eldest daughter shared with me that this book was the most influential read of her entire Classical Conversations <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.com\/programs\/challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenge<\/a> experience!<\/p>\n<p>(Believing biographies to be an essential part of your books for homeschooling, I\u2019d like to sneak in Chuck Colson\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/challenge-i\/products\/1s004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Born Again<\/a><\/em> and Corrie Ten Boom\u2019s<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/challenge-b\/products\/bs029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hiding Place<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n<h3><em>8. <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/parent-resources\/products\/as053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Practicing Affirmation<\/a><\/em> by Sam Crabtree<\/h3>\n<p>Of all the parent resources suggested in our <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/pages\/shoppable-catalog?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Classical Conversations catalog<\/a>, this small book gets my repeat attention. The longer I\u2019ve homeschooled, and the longer I parent, the more I need to practice the art of refreshing the people I love with Godly affirmation. This book will convict and convince you, offer practical skills, and immediately reward you.<\/p>\n<p>(I. Can\u2019t. Help. It! For similar reasons, you might consider reading <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/parent-resources\/products\/bs055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Peace Maker<\/em><\/a> by Ken Sande at the same time.)<\/p>\n<h3><em>9. The Harp and Laurel Wreath<\/em> by Laura M. Berquist<\/h3>\n<p>Nicely organized around the arts of grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric, this compilation of poems and dictation for the classical student will add riches to your reading. Although poetry remains an art form, its presence has diminished in the educational landscape. I\u2019m recommending this book in part as a preservationist and just for fun. My family has had many giggles reciting \u201cThere Once was a Puffin,\u201d been convicted by \u201cThe Fool\u2019s Prayer,\u201d and participated in America\u2019s pastime while listening to \u201cCasey at the Bat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(You may wonder why this is listed as number nine, indicating it may be less accessible. By no means am I suggesting this collection is hard to read. In fact, the opposite is true. But it took me a long time \u2014 and I\u2019m still working on it \u2014 to include poetry in my homeschool reading list. So, it\u2019s number nine because, for me, it required habit formation. And sometimes that is hard.)<\/p>\n<h3>10. <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversationsbooks.com\/collections\/parent-resources\/products\/3s032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Norms and Nobility<\/em><\/a> by David Hicks<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s get it out of the way. I\u2019ve looked and looked \u2014 there\u2019s simply no frugal way to own this book. If you happen to see a copy on a thrift website, snatch it up. But you should expect it to be dog-eared, tabbed, and highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the seminal book on classical education, <em>Norms and Nobility <\/em>is a powerful read with a book club, a mentor, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalconversations.libsyn.com\/ccmm-norms-and-nobility-prologue-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">companion podcast<\/a>. In other words, I recommend a guide. A classical educator himself, David Hicks offers history, philosophy, pedagogy, and strong curriculum suggestions for both brick-and-mortar and homeschool students. It\u2019s worth the deep dive, the struggle to swim, and then the long smooth strokes as you glide through the waters of classical education.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s On Your Homeschool Reading List?<\/h2>\n<p>I <strong>am<\/strong> going to a national homeschool conference this summer. I hope you\u2019ll look for me and share your TBR list. Omitting some books\u2014having turned a blind eye to Shakespeare, Dickens, Lewis, Tolkien, Bronte, Tolstoy\u2014feels like sacrilege!
