Are you new to Classical Conversations and wondering what to expect during the first week of Foundations?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m Courtney Bradshaw, and I remember those early homeschooling days\u2014so many choices, so many questions. My family began our CC journey nearly twelve years ago when our oldest was in second grade; now she\u2019s preparing for college after graduating from Challenge IV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a veteran Foundations mom and tutor, I\u2019d love to walk alongside you the way others once did for me. So grab a cup of coffee, and let\u2019s talk about what your first day in community will look like\u2014and how you can feel confident and prepared.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve Signed Up for Classical Conversations, Now What?<\/h2>\n

You\u2019ve made the decision to homeschool.<\/p>\n

You have registered for a Foundations program.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, you\u2019ve attended a Parent Orientation event.<\/p>\n

Those difficult decisions are complete! Now what? What do you do to prepare for the first day of Foundations? What should you expect? Let\u2019s take a few questions that you might have about your first week and talk through them.<\/p>\n

Why Do We Meet Together for Foundations?<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe believe that education is best experienced together, and that\u2019s why community is the bedrock of our homeschool program.\u201d \u20132025 Catalog page 6\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Foundations program<\/a> is designed to help parents learn to use the classical model of education<\/strong>. One purpose of community is for parents to observe Foundations Tutors model the classical skills of learning and take ideas home to implement.<\/p>\n

Within community, children and parents build relationships with other families<\/strong>. As you walk through this journey with others, you will have the opportunity to be sharpened intellectually and spiritually.<\/p>\n

Community<\/a> offers you opportunities to love and be loved by your neighbor. We hope you will find support and encouragement, and that your children build friendships and learn from trustworthy mentors.<\/p>\n

What Can You Expect on the First Day?<\/h2>\n

Each Foundations community begins its time with an Opening Assembly<\/strong>. During this time, Foundations families meet for announcements, instructions, and family presentations<\/strong>. Each week, families take turns introducing themselves. Don\u2019t worry, you will not be asked to do this on Day One! Your Director will assign your family a week with plenty of time to prepare.<\/p>\n

After the assembly, each group of students will head off to class with their Tutor. If you did not get a chance to meet your child\u2019s Tutor at Parent Orientation, that\u2019s ok. You will get to know your Tutor well this year.<\/p>\n

Communities usually divide groups by age; however, this changes a little depending on the area. A smaller community might need fewer groups with a broader age span than larger communities.<\/p>\n

If you have children in more than one group, check with your Director to determine which of your children\u2019s classes is the best place to start. He\/she will know which Tutors need a parent\u2019s assistance. If you have a child who needs the assurance of having mom or dad close, communicate this to your Director.<\/p>\n
