As in many places, the pandemic made this phenomenon explode, and it was in this context my family came across Classical Conversations.

Starting a Classical Conversations Community in Chile

I remember we started with Cycle 2 in Foundations. My oldest son was just four years old, my daughter was two, and my youngest son had not been born yet. I opened a small community with three families, including my own, where we were figuring out together how we should do things. Despite the fear of facing this new challenge, we were thrilled with the curriculum, and our children were even more so.

In the following years came Cycle 3, Cycle 1, and Cycle 2 again. Many families were added to our small community, so much so that today, it is the largest in Chile! We also had all the programs available in Spanish (Foundations, Essentials, Challenge A, Challenge B, and Challenge I). So, we have been blessed to share experiences with families from almost all the programs offered by CC.

Needless to say, community day is the most anticipated day by all. During the week, the children miss each other, and the mothers are missed, as well. Some are part of the daily prayers of others. We have celebrated birthdays and baby showers, and we have accompanied those who have gone through sad times. Our no-longer-so-small community has certainly become a sign of the Lord’s grace in our lives.

I doubt I am the only mother who sometimes feels fear and hesitation about homeschooling, but Classical Conversations has provided me with a beautiful bouquet of mothers who have supported, counseled, and encouraged me in my work as a Director and educator. Luncheons are certainly the time when many, if not all of us, share our experiences, successes, prayer requests, and concerns.

Read: “The Power of Community: Not What You Think”

Four Morsels of Our Community Lunch

From all these luncheons, I have gleaned a few gems that I would like to share so that you can have a small taste of the savoriest part of our community . . . the communion between sisters and mother-educators, where we have come together to ponder, wonder, and discuss the beauty of homeschooling our children with CC.

1. Classical Conversations gives us the freedom to get to know the children’s interests.

Many of us are just on our way to discovering what interests us and what our little ones are good at. CC allows us to navigate a vast universe of knowledge in each cycle and try as many things as we want with our children.

As one creative mother once suggested to us, we can do different projects each week with the science content at home, recreate the history sentences with puppets, look for books, movies, plays, poems, and anything else we can think of to expand the content of the seven components of New Grammar. The sky is the limit, really!

Even if we only memorize those components, we know and trust that it is enough, as they are the foundation upon which to build with the higher programs.

2. Classical Conversations helps us to know our children’s hearts.

Although this is a statement that any homeschooling parent would support, at CC in particular, we are geared to encourage conversations, teach students to ask good questions, wrestle with ideas that can be challenging, and debate and argue, among many other forms of learning. All of this is always guided and accompanied by parents and Directors.

We thank God so much because we know that this curriculum will give us many opportunities to search our hearts, and it is our prayer to lead them to God.

Unlike other methods of homeschooling where young people are left at the mercy of the prevailing ideology of the curriculum or the criteria of the virtual classroom teacher, CC provides parents with many, many opportunities to show truth, virtue, and beauty to their children through its programs, while trusting and believing that we parents are capable of educating our children, for God Himself has established it so.

3. Classical Conversations enables parents to model for their children in many areas of life.

Our academic orientation makes it very clear that parents are the ones who model to their children how they should participate in the community day.

In Foundations, for example, if a parent sings and skips to memorize the 12-times table, their children will sing and skip to memorize the 12-times table; if a parent participates and cooperates in the science segment, their children will as well.

In this sense, parents model in a more pragmatic way, but when things get tough, such as writing a persuasive essay or doing an affirmative-negative chart, we have the opportunity to model not only the way to do them but the right attitude toward these challenges. Parent and child can go before the Lord asking for wisdom and diligence in every challenge.

Classical Conversations provides many tools and the equipment needed for parents to accomplish this task with a lighter weight, as well as the sweet company of community members who always encourage us along the way.

4. Classical Conversations brings us peace when we look at the finish line.

In Chile, no generation has graduated from Challenge IV yet; however, we parents are always on the lookout for what they are doing in other countries or what the catalog and curriculum say about what a Challenge IV graduate should be like. So far, I have not met a CC family that is not excited for that day to come. Many of us already pray for our little ones so that the character of Christ can be formed in their hearts.

While we recognize that CC is not a “soul-saving machine,” for salvation belongs to the Lord alone, we trust in the fruits that educating our children to “Know God and to make Him known” can bring. We trust in the strength of a program that for years has been educating and graduating eloquent and persuasive young people, lovers of learning and seekers of truth and beauty.

As parents, we are confident that CC provides us with good tools for the work God has entrusted us to do in educating our children.

I hope these four morsels of our lunchtime in community day have been to your delight, as we have enjoyed them in our now-not-so-small community.

The homeschooling movement in South America, especially in Chile, has been growing steadily since 2018.
