The Challenges and Rewards of Homeschool Graduation Ceremonies<\/h2>\n

Planning a graduation can be a big project\u2014even if it\u2019s for a single student. But bringing together a large group of homeschoolers (by which we mean about ten \u00a0or more) comes with a special set of challenges!<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll encounter diverse expectations regarding everything from cost to cake flavor. You\u2019ll explore the upper limits of your patience as you extend the deadlines\u2014again\u2014to accommodate your stragglers. And you\u2019ll marvel at the different ways people can interpret your (seemingly crystal clear) communication.<\/p>\n

But a group homeschool graduation is a celebration of growth and accomplishment for everyone involved, and this type of event is also be incredibly rewarding. Graduation is a chance to honor both students and parents, to give thanks to God and to look forward to His calling ahead. Providing that moment for families is a blessing to them and elevates private home education in the public eye.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not including the many other benefits of a homeschool graduation ceremony as well: that sense of completion, a chance to share a milestone experience with one\u2019s peers, and the opportunity to forge lasting memories, to name just a few.<\/p>\n

How to Plan a Homeschool Graduation<\/h2>\n

Over the years, we\u2019ve assisted hundreds of homeschool graduation planners, and we\u2019ve asked about their experiences and observed a few key behaviors that consistently lead to success. Here\u2019s what we\u2019ve learned.<\/p>\n

1. Start Early<\/h3>\n

A simple graduation can be planned in just a few weeks if necessary; however, most veteran leaders say, \u201cStart early!\u201d<\/p>\n

We recommend that you\u00a0begin in the fall for a spring event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This gives you time to solidify key decisions before inviting seniors to participate, as well as ample time to enlist volunteers, reserve a venue, and hammer out other details.<\/p>\n

But what if it\u2019s mid-March, and you\u2019re just getting started? The good news is that urgency can make some decisions much simpler! Instead of choosing from all the possibilities in the world, you\u2019re limited to what\u2019s still possible with the time you have.<\/p>\n

And you do still have time to plan a great event \u2013 but you\u2019ll have to work fast.<\/p>\n

Solidify your venue and keynote speaker as soon as possible, then develop a ballpark budget and ask for commitment from your families even before everything is finalized. You\u2019ll be able to accomplish more if you delegate whole areas of responsibility (i.e. refreshments, decorations, etc.) to a few of your seniors\u2019 parents.<\/p>\n

2. Define First, then Invite<\/h3>\n

With a group of homeschool graduates, it\u2019s not possible for everyone to agree on everything. Our advice is to\u00a0start with the basic decisions before inviting families to participate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

By doing so, you are providing leadership that families can more easily unite behind.<\/p>\n
